05 Days Mount Kenya Sirimon - Chogoria Trek
Overview
Your Journey
Nairobi – Sirimon Gate – Old Moses Camp (Judmaier Camp)
Your Mount Kenya adventure begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi travelling north through the scenic central highlands. Upon arrival at Sirimon Gate, you will complete park registration and meet your trekking crew including guides, porters, and cook. After a safety briefing, the trek begins through montane forest filled with cedar and olive trees. Wildlife sightings are common in this zone including colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and several bird species. As you gain altitude, the trail opens into moorland vegetation with wide scenic views. You will arrive at Old Moses Camp in the afternoon where meals and accommodation are prepared by your mountain crew.
Old Moses Camp – Shipton Camp
After breakfast, you will trek across the scenic Mackinder Valley, one of the most dramatic landscapes on Mount Kenya. The route offers clear views of the mountain’s main peaks and alpine ridges. You will pass giant lobelia and senecio plants unique to East African alpine environments. The trek maintains a gradual pace to allow natural acclimatization. Lunch is served along the trail before continuing towards Shipton Camp, located beneath the towering peaks of Batian and Nelion. Upon arrival, you will rest and prepare for summit day.
Acclimatization Day – Trek Towards Kami Hut / Hausberg Col – Return to Shipton Camp
This day is dedicated to acclimatization to improve summit success and safety. After breakfast, you will take a short hike towards Hausberg Col or Kami Hut following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. This acclimatization hike offers spectacular views of glaciers, rock formations, and alpine valleys. Your guides will monitor your altitude adaptation and provide mountain education and safety guidance. You will return to Shipton Camp for lunch and spend the afternoon resting in preparation for the summit climb.
Summit Point Lenana – Descend to Sirimon Gate – Nairobi
You will wake around midnight for tea and light snacks before beginning your summit ascent under the stars. The trail climbs gradually over rocky terrain and glacial scree slopes. You will reach Point Lenana (4,985m) at sunrise. This is Mount Kenya’s third highest peak and offers breathtaking panoramic views of glaciers, alpine lakes, and surrounding landscapes. On clear days, distant mountain ranges and northern Kenyan plains are visible. After photography and summit celebrations, you will descend to Shipton Camp for breakfast. The trek continues downhill to Old Moses Camp for lunch before completing the final descent to Sirimon Gate. Your driver will meet you at the gate for your transfer back to Nairobi arriving late afternoon or evening.
Mintos Camp – Lake Ellis – Chogoria Gate – Nairobi
After breakfast, you will descend through the stunning Gorges Valley with views of waterfalls, alpine lakes, and valleys. You will pass Lake Ellis, one of Mount Kenya’s most picturesque locations, perfect for photography and relaxation. The trail continues downhill through bamboo and rainforest vegetation towards Chogoria Gate. Upon arrival at the park exit, you will receive your Mount Kenya trekking certificate before meeting your driver for the return journey to Nairobi.
