Mt Kenya Bird Watching
Overview
Your Journey
Day 1: Nairobi – Sirimon Gate – Forest Bird Watching Trek
Your expedition begins with a morning departure from Nairobi travelling north through Kenya’s fertile agricultural highlands toward Mount Kenya’s northern access point. Upon arrival at Sirimon Gate, you will meet your birding specialist guide, trekking crew, and porters. After registration and orientation, the trek begins through dense montane forest rich in birdlife and biodiversity. The forest hosts numerous bird species including sunbirds, turacos, hornbills, and forest raptors. The guide will conduct frequent bird observation stops, teaching identification techniques and sharing ecological knowledge. The trail gradually opens into moorland vegetation with scenic views of the mountain slopes. Arrival at camp is usually in the afternoon allowing time for relaxed evening bird observation.
Day 2: Trek to Shipton Camp with Bird Observation Stops
After breakfast, the trek continues across the scenic Mackinder Valley. The landscape changes dramatically as trekkers move into higher altitude habitats with unique plant species such as giant lobelias and senecios. Bird watching continues throughout the trek with opportunities to observe high-altitude species adapted to moorland and alpine environments. The pace remains moderate allowing frequent observation and photography stops. You will arrive at Shipton Camp in the afternoon, located beneath Mount Kenya’s dramatic peaks. The evening includes bird activity observation and altitude acclimatization.
Day 3: Alpine Bird Watching and Nature Exploration
This day focuses on slow-paced alpine exploration and bird observation around Shipton Camp and surrounding valleys. The alpine ecosystem supports specialized bird species that survive in extreme high-altitude conditions. Trekkers participate in guided acclimatization walks to nearby ridges and glacial valleys while learning about high-altitude plant adaptation and fragile mountain ecosystems. This day allows rest and proper acclimatization before the summit attempt while maximizing wildlife and nature observation opportunities.
Day 4: Summit Attempt – Point Lenana
You will wake shortly after midnight for tea and snacks before beginning the summit ascent under the stars. The trail climbs gradually across rocky alpine slopes and glacial scree. You will reach Point Lenana at sunrise. The summit offers spectacular panoramic views of glaciers, crater lakes, and surrounding landscapes. Early morning hours also provide rare opportunities to observe high-altitude bird activity. After summit celebrations and photography, trekkers descend back to Shipton Camp for rest and lunch before continuing to lower altitude camp.
Day 5: Descend to Sirimon Gate – Return to Nairobi
After breakfast, the descent begins through alpine vegetation into moorland and forest habitats. This section provides final opportunities for bird watching and nature photography.Upon reaching Sirimon Gate, you will meet your transport and drive back to Nairobi arriving in the afternoon or early evening marking the end of the expedition.
