Overview

The 6 Days Marangu Route is the only Kilimanjaro trail offering hut accommodation, making it one of the most comfortable ways to summit Africa’s highest peak. This classic trekking route is located within Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania. The extra acclimatization day included in the 6-day itinerary significantly improves summit success rates while allowing trekkers to enjoy diverse mountain scenery.

Your Journey

Day 1

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your Kilimanjaro trekking adventure begins with park registration before entering dense tropical rainforest. The trail passes through lush vegetation and offers opportunities to spot wildlife and unique bird species. The trek ends at Mandara Hut where climbers stay in wooden mountain huts.

Day 2

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Leaving the rainforest, the trail ascends into moorland with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and open alpine terrain. The vegetation changes dramatically with giant lobelias and heather plants dominating the landscape.

Day 3

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Trekkers spend the day acclimatizing to altitude with a short hike toward Mawenzi Ridge before returning to Horombo Hut for rest. This additional day improves altitude adaptation and increases chances of reaching the summit successfully.

Day 4

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

The trail gradually crosses the alpine desert landscape known as the saddle between Kilimanjaro’s peaks. Vegetation becomes sparse as climbers approach Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt. The afternoon is spent resting and preparing for the midnight summit climb.

Day 5

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

The summit push begins shortly after midnight. Climbers trek slowly through steep volcanic scree to Gilman’s Point and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Day 6

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

The final day involves descending through moorland and rainforest zones back to Marangu Gate. Climbers receive summit certificates and celebrate completing their Kilimanjaro trekking adventure.
