Mount Kenya Multi Route Grand Traverse – Detailed Day-to-Day Itinerary
Overview
Your Journey
Day 1: Nairobi – Burguret Gate – Burguret Forest Camp
Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi, driving north through the scenic agricultural highlands towards Mount Kenya National Park. Upon arrival at Burguret Gate, you will meet your full mountain crew including guides, porters, and cook. After registration and briefing, the trek begins through dense tropical rainforest. This section is rich in biodiversity and offers excellent opportunities to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys, forest elephants, and exotic bird species. The trail is relatively gentle but can be muddy depending on weather conditions. You will arrive at Burguret Forest Camp in the afternoon where your crew will have prepared tents and hot refreshments. The evening is spent relaxing, enjoying dinner, and receiving your first altitude and safety briefing.
Day 2: Burguret Forest Camp – Giant Bamboo Zone Camp
After breakfast, the trek continues deeper into the mountain transitioning into the Giant Bamboo zone. This area is unique to Mount Kenya and provides a mystical trekking experience with towering bamboo forests surrounding the trail. The route becomes slightly steeper, allowing gradual altitude gain which supports acclimatization. Wildlife sightings remain common here, particularly forest birds and small mammals. You will stop for a picnic lunch along the trail before continuing to Bamboo Zone Camp. Upon arrival, enjoy hot drinks and relaxation while surrounded by pristine wilderness rarely visited by trekkers.
Day 3: Bamboo Zone – Highland Castle Moorlands
Today marks your transition from forest to alpine moorland vegetation. The landscape opens dramatically, revealing giant lobelias, senecio plants, and expansive valleys. The trek offers breathtaking views of the mountain’s jagged peaks as you gain elevation steadily. The air becomes cooler and clearer as you approach the Highland Castle area, a spectacular camping location surrounded by rolling moorlands. This day is crucial for acclimatization and guides will maintain a slow, steady trekking pace. After arriving at camp, you will have time to rest and hydrate while enjoying panoramic sunset views.
Day 4: Highland Castle – Shipton Camp
After breakfast, the trek continues into the alpine zone where vegetation becomes sparse and rugged glacial valleys dominate the landscape. The route gradually merges with sections of the Sirimon trail as you approach Shipton Camp. Shipton Camp sits beneath the towering peaks of Batian and Nelion, offering one of Mount Kenya’s most spectacular base camp settings. Upon arrival, lunch is served followed by rest and optional short acclimatization walks. Your guides will provide a detailed summit briefing, explaining safety procedures, weather conditions, and summit strategy.
Day 5: Summit Attempt – Point Lenana – Mintos Camp (Chogoria Route)
You will wake around midnight for tea and light snacks before beginning the summit ascent under the stars. The trail climbs gradually over rocky terrain and glacial scree slopes. Reaching Point Lenana (4,985m) at sunrise is the highlight of your expedition. From the summit, enjoy breathtaking views across Mount Kenya’s glaciers, lakes, and surrounding plains. On clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro can sometimes be seen in the distance. After photography and celebration, you will descend via the scenic Chogoria route. The descent offers stunning views of the Gorges Valley, Lake Michaelson, and dramatic cliffs. You will arrive at Mintos Camp in the afternoon for rest and overnight stay.
Day 6: Mintos Camp – Lake Ellis
Today is a scenic descent through the breathtaking Gorges Valley. The trail offers incredible views of waterfalls, valleys, and alpine lakes. You will descend steadily towards Lake Ellis, one of Mount Kenya’s most picturesque camping locations. The lake is surrounded by rolling hills and provides excellent photography opportunities. The afternoon is relaxed allowing trekkers to recover after summit day. Optional nature walks around the lake can be arranged.
Day 7: Lake Ellis – Chogoria Gate – Nairobi
After breakfast, you will complete the final descent through bamboo and rainforest vegetation towards Chogoria Gate. At the park exit, you will receive your Mount Kenya trekking certificate and bid farewell to your mountain crew. Lunch is usually served in Chogoria town before the drive back to Nairobi.
